   The Tejano Association for Historical Preservation and other participating organizations present the 13th Annual Cesar Chavez Parade and Celebration will be held Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.  It will begin at Sellers Brothers Grocery 601 N. Cesar Chavez Blvd. Houston, Texas and end at Hidalgo Park, 7000 Avenue Q deep in the heart of Houston’s East End. Come and show your support for the legacy of the Mexican-American labor activist  Cesar E. INFORMATION ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION

The Tejano Association for Historical Preservation is a non profit organization that was formed in 1989 with the primary purpose of identifying and preserving buildings and sites that have historical and or archaeological significance to the Hispanic, early Texas, French and native/indigenous cultures. The association is also involved in raising scholarships and in the past has awarded them to students studying Hispanic/Tejano history and historical preservation. Meetings are open to the public.

The following lists some of the accomplishments of the the T.A.H.P.:

  • TAHP was instrumental in obtaining a State Historical Marker for Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, text written by Dr. Margaret Henson, dedicated in 1991.
  • Linda Alonzo Saenz introduced Tejano Monument to Go Tejano Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  On March 14, 2004, Go Tejano Day, the show included a special presentation on behalf of the Tejano Monument Committee. "El Vaquero," the limited edition bronze statuette by TX artist Armando Hinijosa was presented by Dr. Cayetano Barrera to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  "El Vaquero," now sits in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Tejas Room.  El Vaquero is a replica of the life statue bronze that will be a part of the Tejano Monument to be dedicated at the Capitol in Austin, TX., spring of 2012.
  • Benny Martinez wrote original text of LULAC 60 history, edited by Loretta Williams with final edition by Dr. Thomas Kreneck.  TX State Historical Subject Marker dedicated on Feb. 18, 2006. 
  • Loretta Williams wrote text for Rafael Manchola TX State Historical Subject Marker, edited by Dr. Andres Tijerina and Dr. Armando Alonzo.  Dedicated on July 15, 2006 at the Goliad Historic Courthouse Square.
  • Loretta Williams completed paperwork request for relocation of Lorenzo de Zavala TX State Historical Subject Marker to Lorenzo de Zavala HISD.  TAHP worked with Magnolia Park Historical Preservation Association in planning for the re-dedication ceremony of Lorenzo de Zavala Historical Marker, Magnolia Park Centennial Marker and Celebration which was held on Oct. 6, 2009.
  • Loretta Williams raised funds for the Felix Tijerina TX State Historical Subject Marker dedication and ceremony which was held Mary 25, 2010.  Felix Tijerina text was written by Dr. Thomas Kreneck. 

 

  • Were successful in the renaming of 67th Street to Cesar Chavez Blvd. T.A.H.P has organized a yearly parade to commemorate the renaming of Cesar Chavez Blvd. with the following event themes:

Recognizing the Tejano Monument

  • Were successful in obtaining 2 roads in memory of Juan N. Seguin: Park Road 1836 between State Highway 134 and the San Jacinto Battleground is now named Juan N. Seguin Boulevard & the 610 SE Loop at Texas 225 has been renamed the Juan N. Seguin Interchange. Special thanks to Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr., District 6 & State Representative Rick Noriega, District 145.   The dedication ceremony was held Sept. 29, 2001 at the San Jacinto Monument and Museum.
  • Provided portraits on loan of the following individuals to H.I.S.D. schools, by Artist Luis Fernando:

  • Participated in H.I.S.D School Naming Committee by submitting letters and history of Col. Juan N. Seguin and other notable Hispanics.
  • Displayed historical artifacts at the Houston Public Library, Julia Ideson Building, titled, "Historical Caretakers-Houston Hispanic Historical Groups & exhibited artifacts at Honorable Mayor Lee Brown's Mayor Office Library in October 2001
  • Submitted the names to Tejano R.O.O.T.S. (Remembering Our Own Tejano Stars), the Tejano Hall of Fame in Alice, Texas. Ventura Alonzo, Queen of the Accordion, who performed with Alonzo Y SusRancheros, was inducted August 3, 2002. The Association has in the past had guest lecturers have been: Armando C. Alonzo, Ph.D. of Texas A & M University, Carolina Crimm, Ph.D., Sam Houston State University, Thomas Kreneck, Ph.D.with The Special Collections & Archives of the Mary and Jeff Bell Library at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Arturo Ramirez, Attorney at Law, Guadalupe San Miguel, Jr., University of Houston Associate Professor, Andres Tijerina, Ph.D. of Austin Community College, and BeaSvambera, educator and recipient of a fellowship of the Directors of the Holocaust Museum. Guest lecturers speak on a variety of interesting topics related to history or archaeology (the majority of these lectures have been videotaped). We welcome new members.

On Dec. 12, 2003 TAHP requested the support of Houston Independent School District to collect pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters in suppot of the Tejano Monument.  The HISD School Board gave their approval and on April 20, 2004, 14,053.20 donated by HISD school children was turned over for the Tejano Monument Project.
