HE RAISED FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND POSSESSED A KEEN SENSE OF HUMOR. HE SHARED A CAMARADERIE WITH MANY ON THE TRAIL RIDE. COME JOIN US AS WE RELIVE THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MR. RUDOLPHO "RUDY" VARA, A TRUE PIONEER.

TAHP'S GUEST SPEAKER OF APRIL 29, 2001 WAS DR. GUADALUPE SAN MIGUEL, JR. HIS LECTURE AND BOOKSIGNING RE. HIS BOOK "BROWN NOT WHITE SCHOOL INTEGRATION AND THE CHICANO MOVEMENT" IN HOU. DESCRIBES IN DETAIL THE CONTROVERSY OF THE INTEGRATION OF HISD'S SCHOOLS IN THE 70'S AND THE EVOLVEMENT OF THE "HUELGA SCHOOLS." DR. SAN MIGUEL RECEIVED HIS Ph.D. FROM STANFORD UNIVERSITY AND IS AN ASSOC. PROF. OF U OF H. TAHP WISHES HIM SUCCESS WITH HIS PUBLICATION AND FUTURE WORKS.

DR. THOMAS H. KRENECK'S LECTURE AND BOOKSIGNING OF "MEXICAN AMERICAN ODYSSEY FELIX TRIJERINA, ENTREPRENEUR AND CIVIC LEADER, 1905-1965" AT FELIX'S MEXICAN RESTUARANT ON MAY 17, 2001 WAS A SUCCESS AND WELL ATTENDED. Felix Tijerina was an icon of LULAC Council #60 and served four terms as National Pres. of LULAC from 1956-1960. While National Pres., he launched the " Little School of the 400" which would teach Spanish speaking children 400 basic English words in preschool. This program would later be known as Head Start. Felix Tijerina was an active leader locally and nationally. He worked to promote the Hispanic community and strived for improvements for all. Dr. Thomas Kreneck is head of Special Collections and Archives at Texas A&M Univ. Corpus Christi. He also founded the Mexican American archival component at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center. He taught Mex. Am. History for the Mex. Am. Studies Program At U of H. TAHP congratulates Dr. Kreneck on this fine record of Mr. Felix Tijerina's life, better known as Mr. LULAC.

TAHP MEMBER GENARO FLORES PARTICIPATED ON THE HOMECOMING COMMITTEE THAT ORGANIZED AN OUTSTANDING PROGRAM. LAWRENCE VILLASENOR AND FELIX FRAGA WERE ENTRUSTED WITH THE ARCHIVES AND MEMORABILIA OF TOMAS 'LUPE' LOPEZ, AN All STAR BASKETBALL PLAYER. MR. VILLASENOR THEN APPROACHED HON. MARIO GALLEGOS, DIST. 6 TO ASSIST IN THE PRESERVATION OF THE DOCUMENTS. HON. GALLEGOS REQUESTED THE ASSISTANCE OF TATCHO MINDIOLA, JR. Ph.D., DIR. OF THE CENTER FOR MEX. AM. STUDIES U OF H TO PRESERVE AND PLACE THE ARCHIVES AT THE HOU. METROPOLITAN LIBRARY. DR. MINDIOLA WAS INSTURMENTAL IN THE PRESERVATION OF THE ARCHIVES AND PLACING THEM AT THE HOU. RICK NORIEGA CONCERNING THIS REDESIGNATION AND PLANS FOR THEIR NEXT MEETING WITH DR. MARGARET HENSON. ON AUG. 18, 2000 TAHP SUBMITTED A LETTER TO HISD RECOMMENDING THREE NAMES TO BE ADDED FOR CONSIDERATION IN NAMING AFTER A SCHOOL. INFORMATION OF THE HIST. RE. JUAN N. SEGUIN, ELOY PEREZ AND CARLOS GARCIA WAS ATTACHED. ON SEPT. 27, 2000 TAHP RECEIVED A LETTER FROM MS. ON DEC. 8, 2000, TAHP HELD THEIR MEETING AT TEATRO BILINGUE DE HOUSTON. THE MEMBERS HAD ALREADY DISCUSSED DESIGNATING A STREET FOR JUAN N. SEGUIN SINCE JULY 27, 2000 BOARD MEETING. T.A.H.P. MEMBER, MS. SVAMBERA'S LAPORTE JUNIOR HISTORIANS PRESENTED THE PLAY "JUAN N. SEGUIN, A MAN FOR ALL HEROES." TAHP MEMBER MACARIO RAMIREZ HAD ISSUED PRESS RELEASES REGARDING THIS PRESENTATION. NORIEGA AND DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY OF HIS PORTRAYING COL. JUAN N. SEGUIN AND WORKING TOGETHER ON REDESIGNATING A STREET OR HWY. AFTER THE TEJANO HERO. ALBERT SEGUIN GONZALES GRACIOUSLY THANKED TAHP FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION AND DONATION IN THE SEGUIN EQUESTRIAN PROJECT AND ALSO EXHIBITED THE MINIATURE COPY OF THE STATUE.

ON MAY 4, 2001, THE MAYORS OF DEER PARK, LA PORTE, PASADENA AND SOME OF THEIR CITY COUNCILMEN MET WITH HON. NORIEGA TO EXPRESS THEIR DISSENT OF THE REDESIGNATION OF HWY 225. AS A RESULT OF THEIR MEETING HON. GALLEGOS INTRODUCED THE AMENDED SENATE BILL 1831 THAT PASSED WITH 2/3 OF THE VOTE.

WE RECOGNIZE THAT WITHOUT OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS (HON.REP. RICK NORIEGA DIST. 145 INTRODUCED H.B. 3460 AND HON. SEN. HIRAM MARTIN HAS BEEN THE CO-CHAIR FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS. THIS YEAR'S PARADE WAS THE MOST COLORFUL AND LARGEST. SYLVIA MARTINEZ EDITOR IN CHIEF OF LATINA MAGAZINE WAS THE GRAND MARSHAL. THE SEGUIN FAMILY HIST. SOCIETY ALSO PARTICIAPATED. FOLLOWING THE PARADE, FOOD BOOTHS, MUSIC AND BALLET FOLKLORICO PERFORMANCES WERE HELD IN THE TOWN SQUARE. THE ZARAGOZA SOCIETY SPONSORED THE OFFICIAL CINCO DE MAYO CEREMONY HELD AT THE CHAPEL OF OUR LADY OF LORETO AND THE REDEDICATION CEREMONY OF THE IGNACIO ZARAGOZA HOUSE. SPEAKING AT THE CEREMONIES WERE HON. CONGRESSMAN HINOJOSA, EMILIO VARGAS III, PRES. ZARAGOZA SOCIETY, JUSTICE OF THE PEACE, HON. EMILIO VARGAS PCT. 1, HERNAN JASO, EX MAYOR OF GOLIAD, WALT DABNEY OF TX PARKS AND WILDLIFE DIV. DIR. AND OTHER DIGNITARIES. ARMANDO ALONZO, Ph.D. DELIVERED THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS. HOMERO AND MRS. VERA OF EL MESTENO MAGAZINE AND THOMAS KRENECK, Ph.D. ALSO ATTENDED. LUPITA BARRERA, MANAGER FOR THE MISSION WAS RECOGNIZED FOR HER EFFORTS. TAHP PRES., BENNY MARTINEZ WAS DRESSED IN A MEXICAN MILITARY UNIFORM. LUIS RUELAS OF TX. PARKS AND WILDLIFE PROVIDED SPANISH TRANSLATION AT THE ZARAGOZA REDEDICATION CEREMONY. THE FESTIVITIES WERE WELL ATTENDED.

LULAC DISTRICT 18 CINCO DE MAYO PARADE WAS HELD IN DOWNTOWN HOU. MAY 5, 2001. The Parade was the brainchild of Johnny Mata who was the District Dir. for District 18 at the time. He requested Mike Garza to chair the parade in 1993 and for the first two years there was no sponsor. In 1995, Ernie Guzman of Pontiac Dealership was the official sponsor. In 1996, there was no sponsor of the parade. In 1997, Planet Ford Owner Randall Reed, was the official sponsor. In 1998, Tex Star Motors Owner George McIngvale, Jr., was the official sponsor and has continued in this role. Mike Garza would chair the parade until 1999. The co-sponsors this year were Hou. Tx. based H.E.B., Enviro Tech and Sterling Bank. If you would like to volunteer, contact Charles Flores, Chair at 713-675-6968.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO GET TO THE MEETING

Get on Interstate 45 North or South; exit Woodridge (41-A). Turn on Woodridge heading east. At the next light (Garland St.) take a left and another immediate left. Enter the gate on the left and park next to the Eastside Annex of Houston Community College. The meeting is in the Carlos Garcia Auditorium.
